The Philips 5400 Series LatteGo EP5446/70 is a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine for people who want freshly ground coffee and milk drinks without manually grinding, dosing, tamping or steaming milk.
It combines a ceramic grinder, automatic brewing and the two-part LatteGo milk system with 12 programmed coffee drinks and four user profiles plus guest. This overview is adapted from our existing equipment review, rather than a hands-on testing report.

Why consider the Philips 5400?
The main attraction is automation combined with variety. Select a drink on the display, adjust the available settings and let the machine grind, dose and brew. For compatible milk drinks, the attached LatteGo container handles milk preparation too.
This is fundamentally different from a portafilter machine. It prioritises day-to-day convenience over hands-on control, particularly in a household with several coffee preferences.

Which drinks can it make?
The existing EP5446/70 equipment information lists Espresso, Coffee, Americano, Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, Flat White, Café au Lait, Coffee Latte, Caffè Crema, Ristretto, Espresso Lungo and a Travel Mug function. Frothed milk and hot water are also available.
The practical question is which recipes you will regularly choose. A larger menu has more value in a household that actually uses the variety than for someone who makes only black coffee.
How automatic is the workflow?
For normal operation, there is no portafilter to remove, fill, distribute or tamp. Grinding, dosing and extraction happen internally. With the milk container attached, a suitable recipe also includes automatic milk preparation.
You still fill the hopper and tank, empty waste and clean the machine. Fully automatic drink preparation does not mean it looks after itself.
The LatteGo milk system
LatteGo uses a two-part external container rather than conventional internal milk tubes. That construction simplifies access to milk-contact components for cleaning.
Philips lists the milk system among dishwasher-safe components. This does not mean every part of the machine is dishwasher-safe, or that milk residue can be left in place. Clean promptly after use and follow the current instructions for the exact model.
Ceramic grinder and adjustment
The integrated grinder has 12 adjustment steps and stores beans above the brewing system. It removes the immediate need for a separate grinder, but offers less independent upgradeability than separate espresso equipment.
Our existing equipment information records Philips' grinder durability rating of at least 20,000 cups. Treat that as a manufacturer specification, not a lifespan established by our testing.
Adjust the grinder according to Philips' instructions. Do not force the mechanism while stationary if the instructions require adjustment during grinding. Allow several drinks before judging a change, because grounds from the previous setting can remain in the system.
Customisation and Extra Shot
The Coffee Customiser lets you adjust supported recipe parameters. Extra Shot provides another way to increase the coffee contribution for compatible drinks.
This is useful personalisation within an automated system, rather than direct control over every part of espresso extraction. It can help you adapt factory recipes without taking on manual puck preparation.
Four profiles plus guest
Saved profiles are one of the stronger reasons to consider the 5400 for a shared household. Different people can retain their preferred drink settings rather than recreating them each time.
The guest profile gives occasional users a separate place to make adjustments without changing the regular users' saved preferences.
Aroma Extract temperature management
Philips calls its brewing control system Aroma Extract. The existing equipment page records an approximate manufacturer-specified brewing range of 90–98°C, with temperature and water flow managed internally.
That should not be read as a guarantee of ideal extraction for every bean. It describes the automated approach rather than the level of manual temperature control an espresso enthusiast might seek.
Capacity and pre-ground coffee
The listed capacities are a 1.8-litre tank, 275g bean hopper and 0.26-litre milk container. Recipe size, strength and rinsing cycles all affect refill frequency, so these figures do not translate into a fixed number of drinks.
The pre-ground option can be useful for an occasional decaffeinated coffee while the hopper contains caffeinated beans. Follow the dosing instructions rather than treating the compartment as another hopper.
Cleaning, brew group and AquaClean
The removable brew group provides access for routine maintenance. Coffee oils and residue still build up in automatic systems, so follow Philips' rinsing, cleaning and lubrication schedule.
AquaClean filtration can extend the interval before descaling when filters are installed and replaced as specified. Filters remain consumables, and filtration does not replace cleaning the milk system, tray, grounds container or brew group.
Ease of maintenance is worth weighing alongside menu size. The most convenient drink workflow still comes with regular cleaning jobs.
Worktop space
The existing EP5446/70 specifications give approximate dimensions of 24.6cm wide, 43.3cm deep and 37.2cm high, with a weight of 8kg.
The machine is not especially wide, but depth matters. Check the full footprint, overhead clearance and access needed for filling and cleaning. Confirm current model specifications before buying.
Philips 5400 versus Philips 5500
The Philips 5500 LatteGo extends the menu to 20 hot and iced recipes and adds newer convenience features.
That does not automatically make the 5400 a poor choice. Compare the drinks you use, the features that matter and the current price difference rather than judging on recipe count alone.
What about the Philips 3300 and 2200?
The Philips 3300 LatteGo offers a more focused menu while retaining automatic milk preparation. The Philips 2200 EP2220/10 takes a simpler approach to automatic black coffee with manual milk frothing.
If saved profiles and a broad selection do not matter to your household, a simpler model may cover your actual routine.
Philips 5400 versus Sage Barista Express
The Sage integrates a grinder but leaves portafilter preparation and milk steaming to you. That offers more involvement and opportunity to learn. The Philips handles those steps internally, making it a different proposition rather than a direct replacement for the manual experience.
Philips 5400 versus Ninja Luxe Café Premier
The Ninja Luxe Café Premier assists with several preparation steps but still requires portafilter handling. It occupies a middle ground between traditional manual espresso and fully automatic brewing.
Choose the Philips if minimising preparation is your priority. Consider an assisted portafilter workflow if you want guidance while remaining involved.
Who is it best for?
The 5400 is worth considering if several people share a machine, want different black and milk drinks, value saved settings and prefer automatic preparation.
Look elsewhere if you want detailed control of dose, distribution, tamping and milk texture, already own a grinder you want to use, or mainly drink black coffee and would rarely use automatic milk.
Our take
The strongest argument is whole-bean coffee, automatic milk and saved household preferences with little manual preparation. The trade-off is control: the machine makes many decisions that a manual espresso enthusiast may prefer to manage.
If automation matches your priorities, that is not a flaw. Choose according to the routine you want and verify the current EP5446/70 package, specification and price.
