Philips 5400 Series LatteGo – Fully Automatic Bean-to-Cup Coffee Machine

The Philips 5400 Series LatteGo EP5446/70 is a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine designed for people who want freshly ground coffee and milk-based drinks without manually grinding, dosing, tamping or steaming milk.

It combines a built-in ceramic grinder, automatic brewing system and Philips' two-part LatteGo milk system, with 12 pre-programmed coffee drinks and four user profiles plus a guest profile.

That makes it fundamentally different from machines such as the Sage Barista Express. The Philips handles most of the preparation for you: choose your drink, adjust the available settings and let the machine grind, brew and dispense it.

Why Consider the Philips 5400 LatteGo?

The main reason to consider the Philips 5400 is automation combined with drink variety.

Instead of preparing a portafilter manually, the machine grinds whole coffee beans internally, doses the brewing unit and prepares the selected drink automatically.

For milk-based drinks, the LatteGo system froths and dispenses the milk without requiring you to use a traditional steam wand.

You retain some control over the resulting drink, but considerably less manual involvement is required than with a semi-automatic espresso machine.

Key Features

  • 12 pre-programmed coffee drinks – Covers a broad selection of black and milk-based coffees.
  • Integrated ceramic grinder – Grinds whole coffee beans inside the machine.
  • 12 grinder settings – Allows the grinder to be adjusted from finer to coarser settings.
  • LatteGo milk system – Automatic milk preparation using a two-part container without internal milk tubes.
  • Four user profiles plus guest – Useful in households where different people prefer different drink settings.
  • TFT display – Used to select and customise drinks.
  • 1.8-litre removable water tank – Suitable for regular household use.
  • 275g bean hopper – Holds whole coffee beans above the integrated grinder.
  • 0.26-litre LatteGo container – Holds milk for automatic milk drinks.
  • Removable brew group – Allows important internal brewing components to be accessed for cleaning.
  • AquaClean compatible – Designed to work with Philips' replaceable water-filter system.

Which Drinks Can It Make?

Philips specifies 12 pre-programmed coffee drinks on the 5400 Series.

The available coffee menu includes:

  • Espresso
  • Coffee
  • Americano
  • Cappuccino
  • Latte macchiato
  • Flat white
  • Café au lait
  • Coffee latte
  • Caffè crema
  • Ristretto
  • Espresso Lungo
  • Travel Mug function

The machine can also dispense frothed milk and hot water.

This variety is one of the main differences between the 5400 and simpler bean-to-cup machines that provide only a handful of automatic drink selections.

How Automatic Is It?

The Philips 5400 is a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine.

For a typical drink, you select the coffee from the display, adjust your preferences where required and start the programme.

The machine then handles grinding, dosing and brewing. If you've selected a compatible milk drink and attached the LatteGo container, it also handles milk preparation.

You don't need to remove a portafilter, distribute coffee, tamp it or manually steam milk.

That makes the Philips considerably more convenient than a traditional espresso setup, but it also removes much of the hands-on control.

LatteGo Milk System

Philips' LatteGo system is one of the 5400's defining features.

Rather than drawing milk through a network of internal tubes, LatteGo uses a two-part external milk container to froth and dispense milk.

The absence of conventional milk tubes simplifies one of the less enjoyable parts of owning an automatic coffee machine: cleaning the milk system.

The LatteGo components are removable, and Philips lists the milk system among the dishwasher-safe components.

That doesn't mean milk residue should be left sitting in the system. Components that contact milk should still be cleaned promptly and appropriately after use.

Integrated Ceramic Grinder

The Philips 5400 contains an integrated ceramic burr grinder with 12 adjustment steps.

Philips rates the ceramic grinder for at least 20,000 cups.

Having the grinder built into the machine means you can fill the hopper with whole beans rather than purchasing a separate grinder.

As with other integrated bean-to-cup systems, however, you don't get the same degree of grinder control or independent upgradeability available from a dedicated espresso grinder.

Adjusting the Grinder

The 12 grinder settings allow you to alter the grind from finer to coarser.

Grinder changes on automatic machines should be made according to the manufacturer's instructions. In particular, don't force an adjustment mechanism while the grinder is stationary if the instructions specify adjustment while grinding.

Also allow several drinks after a grinder adjustment before making further changes, because some coffee from the previous setting can remain within the system.

Coffee Customisation

The 5400 provides more flexibility than simply choosing a drink name.

The Coffee Customiser allows you to adjust aspects of the recipe to better match your preference, while an Extra Shot function can increase coffee intensity.

This is useful in a multi-person household because not everyone wants the same strength or volume.

It's still different from manually dialling in espresso, however. You're adjusting parameters within an automated brewing system rather than directly controlling every stage of extraction.

Four User Profiles Plus Guest

The ability to store four individual user profiles plus a guest profile is one of the stronger reasons to consider the 5400 for a shared household.

Once drinks have been adjusted to individual preferences, those settings can be associated with the relevant profile rather than recreated each time.

The guest profile allows occasional users to change settings without altering one of the saved profiles.

Aroma Extract System

Philips calls its brewing control system Aroma Extract.

The manufacturer specifies a brewing-temperature range of approximately 90–98°C, with the system managing temperature and water flow during brewing.

We wouldn't interpret that as meaning one temperature automatically produces the ideal extraction for every coffee bean.

Instead, it's part of the machine's automated approach: temperature management happens internally rather than requiring you to control it like you might on a more advanced manual espresso machine.

1.8-Litre Water Tank and 275g Hopper

The Philips 5400 has a 1.8-litre water tank and 275g bean hopper.

Those capacities are appropriate for a machine designed to prepare multiple coffees throughout the day.

We wouldn't translate either capacity into a fixed number of drinks because consumption varies substantially depending on recipe, coffee strength, rinsing cycles and milk-drink usage.

Using Pre-Ground Coffee

The machine also provides a route for using pre-ground coffee rather than beans from the hopper.

This can be useful if, for example, you normally keep caffeinated beans in the hopper but occasionally want a decaffeinated coffee.

The pre-ground option isn't intended to replace the integrated grinder for everyday use, but it adds useful flexibility.

Cleaning the Brew Group

A major ownership advantage is the removable brew group.

Automatic coffee machines contain brewing components that accumulate coffee oils and residue over time, so access for cleaning matters.

The Philips brew group can be removed for routine cleaning according to the manufacturer's instructions.

That is an important feature to consider when comparing fully automatic machines because ease of maintenance affects long-term ownership just as much as the drink menu.

AquaClean Water Filter

The 5400 is compatible with Philips' AquaClean filtration system.

Philips states that, when the machine and filter are used according to its specified replacement procedure, AquaClean can substantially extend the interval before descaling is required.

That's useful, but it doesn't make the machine maintenance-free.

Filters are consumable items, and the brew group, milk system, drip tray and coffee-waste areas still require routine attention.

Size and Capacity

Philips currently specifies the EP5446/70 at approximately:

  • Width: 24.6cm
  • Depth: 43.3cm
  • Height: 37.2cm
  • Weight: 8kg
  • Water tank: 1.8 litres
  • Bean hopper: 275g
  • Milk container: 0.26 litres

The machine isn't especially wide, but it is relatively deep. Check the complete footprint as well as overhead clearance before buying.

Philips 5400 vs Sage Barista Express

These machines represent very different approaches to making coffee from whole beans.

The Philips 5400 automatically grinds, doses and brews the coffee and can automatically prepare milk through LatteGo.

The Sage Barista Express integrates a grinder but leaves the espresso preparation largely in your hands. You grind into a portafilter, distribute and tamp the coffee, monitor extraction and texture milk manually.

The Philips therefore prioritises automation.

The Sage prioritises involvement and learning while still providing the convenience of an integrated grinder.

Philips 5400 vs Ninja Luxe Café Premier

The Ninja Luxe Café Premier sits somewhere between a manual espresso setup and a fully automatic machine.

It incorporates a grinder and provides considerable assistance with dosing, tamping and milk preparation, but you still handle the portafilter and participate in the brewing workflow.

The Philips goes further with automation. There is no portafilter preparation during normal operation.

If you want some involvement while receiving guidance from the machine, the Ninja has an interesting proposition.

If your priority is selecting a drink and having the machine handle most of the preparation, the Philips is the clearer fit.

Philips 5400 vs Philips 5500

The newer Philips 5500 Series extends the automatic-drink concept further, with Philips currently specifying 20 beverages compared with 12 on the 5400.

That doesn't automatically make the 5400 obsolete.

The important comparison is the features you actually use and the current price difference between the two generations.

If the additional drinks and newer features of the 5500 matter to you, compare the two before buying. If the 5400 provides the drinks you regularly make and is available at a substantially different price, it may still be the more appropriate choice.

Who Is the Philips 5400 Best For?

The Philips 5400 is particularly worth considering if you:

  • want freshly ground coffee without manually preparing a portafilter;
  • make both black and milk-based coffee drinks;
  • want automatic milk frothing;
  • share the machine with several people who have different preferences;
  • value one-touch drink selection;
  • want a built-in grinder rather than separate equipment;
  • want an accessible removable brew group for cleaning; or
  • prioritise convenience over manual espresso control.

Who Should Look Elsewhere?

If you actively want to learn espresso preparation, the Philips removes much of the process you might want to explore.

If you want detailed control over dose, distribution, tamping, beverage ratio and milk-texturing technique, consider a traditional or assisted portafilter machine instead.

If you already own a high-quality espresso grinder, paying for an integrated grinder may not be the most efficient route.

And if you only drink straightforward black coffee, you may not benefit enough from the 5400's automatic milk system and extensive drink menu to justify choosing this particular model.

Our Take

The strongest argument for the Philips 5400 LatteGo is straightforward: it turns whole coffee beans into a wide selection of black and milk-based drinks with very little manual preparation.

The 12-drink menu, four user profiles plus guest, ceramic grinder and LatteGo milk system make particular sense in a household where several people want different coffees from the same machine.

The compromise is control. A fully automatic machine necessarily makes many brewing decisions for you, and it won't provide the same hands-on espresso experience as a Sage Barista Express, Gaggia Classic E24 or similar portafilter machine.

But that's not a flaw if automation is what you're actually looking for.

For someone who wants whole-bean coffee, automatic milk drinks and straightforward day-to-day operation, the Philips 5400 occupies a useful position in the home coffee market.
