Sage Bambino Plus Review: Compact Espresso with Automatic Milk

Stainless-steel Sage Bambino Plus espresso machine with portafilter and steam wand

The Sage Bambino Plus pairs a traditional portafilter workflow with automatic milk-texturing assistance. You still prepare the ground coffee yourself, but the steam system can manage milk temperature and texture while you learn the espresso side.

Its other attractions are compact dimensions and Sage's ThermoJet heating system. There is no integrated grinder, so the full setup needs to include suitable ground coffee or, preferably for learning with fresh beans, a separate espresso-capable grinder.

This overview is adapted from our existing equipment review, rather than a hands-on testing report.

Why consider the Bambino Plus?

It lets you explore espresso without taking on every manual skill at once. Coffee preparation stays hands-on: dose, distribute, tamp, attach the portafilter and start extraction. For milk, select temperature and texture and position the supplied jug on the sensor according to the instructions.

That can make sense if you want to concentrate first on coffee preparation and decide later how much manual milk technique to learn.

Key features

  • ThermoJet heating with a manufacturer-specified three-second heat-up.
  • Internal PID temperature control.
  • 54mm stainless-steel portafilter.
  • Low-pressure pre-infusion followed by 9-bar extraction.
  • Three automatic milk-temperature settings and three texture levels.
  • Optional manual milk steaming.
  • One- and two-cup volumetric controls.
  • A listed 1.9-litre water tank and 19.4cm width.

How manual is it?

This is a semi-automatic espresso machine with automatic milk assistance, not a whole-bean-to-cup system. You grind or measure coffee, fill the basket, distribute and tamp, then attach the portafilter. Afterwards, you empty and clean it.

Programmed volumetric controls can stop extraction automatically, but grind, dose and preparation still shape the result. Weighing coffee in and espresso out can help you learn what is happening.

54mm portafilter and filter baskets

Sage designs the system around a 54mm portafilter and approximately 18g of coffee. Choose a suitable dose for your basket and coffee rather than assuming one number works universally.

The existing package information lists single- and dual-wall baskets for one- and two-cup preparation. Dual-wall baskets are more forgiving with pre-ground coffee or less precise grinding. Single-wall baskets give grind and puck preparation a larger role when learning to dial in fresh coffee.

Portafilter diameter alone is not a quality ranking. A 54mm domestic system should not simply be labelled commercial-sized because many commercial machines use 58mm.

Budget for a separate grinder

There is no grinder inside the Bambino Plus. Include an espresso-capable burr grinder in the budget if you want to use whole beans and single-wall baskets.

Espresso benefits from small, repeatable grind adjustments. Being able to grind finely is not the same as having useful espresso adjustment.

The advantage of separate equipment is independent choice and upgrades. The compromise is additional cost and worktop space.

ThermoJet startup and temperature control

Sage specifies approximately three seconds for the ThermoJet system to heat. That is a manufacturer specification, not a timing established by our testing. Warming the cup and portafilter can still matter for consistency.

Internal PID control helps manage brewing temperature. It does not mean you have a display offering arbitrary brew-temperature selection. Compare the exact controls if temperature experimentation is important to you.

Pre-infusion and extraction pressure

The source specification records low-pressure pre-infusion and 9-bar extraction delivered by a 15-bar pump. The initial stage wets the coffee before the main extraction.

The maximum pump rating is not the pressure you should chase through the coffee, and a larger rating is not automatically better. Grind, dose, preparation and beverage yield remain fundamental.

Automatic and manual milk texturing

The automatic system offers three temperatures and three texture settings. Used with the supplied jug and sensor as instructed, it can reduce the initial learning curve for milk-based drinks.

You can also steam manually as your confidence develops. Automatic assistance does not permanently confine you to a milk programme.

After automatic steaming, returning the wand to its lowered position triggers a purge. That helps clear the internal path but does not replace wiping milk from the wand exterior promptly.

Size and water capacity

The existing equipment specifications list approximate dimensions of 19.4cm wide × 36.2cm deep × 30.4cm high, with a 1.9-litre tank. Confirm current specifications for the exact listing before buying.

The narrow body is useful, but the complete station also needs space for a grinder, preparation and milk jug. Measure the setup rather than only the machine.

What is included?

The source package list includes the portafilter, tamper, Razor dosing tool, water filter, 480ml stainless-steel milk jug, single- and dual-wall baskets, cleaning tool and cleaning disc.

Retail packages can differ. Check current contents, particularly baskets and accessories, before purchase.

Bambino Plus versus standard Bambino

The major distinction is milk: the standard Bambino uses manual steaming, while the Plus adds selectable automatic temperature and texture. The source specification also lists a larger tank on the Plus, 1.9 litres compared with 1.4 litres.

If you already enjoy manual steaming, compare whether the Plus features justify the current price difference. If automatic milk is your reason for buying, make sure you choose the correct model.

Bambino Plus versus Barista Express

The Sage Barista Express incorporates a grinder but leaves milk steaming manual. The Bambino Plus keeps grinding separate and assists with milk.

Compare complete setups. If you already have a capable grinder, the Bambino route can avoid duplicating equipment.

Bambino Plus versus Gaggia Classic E24

The E24 follows a traditional boiler-based approach with a 58mm filter-holder and manual milk steaming. The Bambino Plus prioritises fast startup, volumetric controls and automatic milk assistance.

They suit different preferences for architecture, preparation and learning. Check the exact Gaggia generation when comparing specifications.

Bambino Plus versus Hamilton Beach BaristaPro Touch

Both offer a compact portafilter workflow, but the Sage adds automatic milk assistance. The Hamilton Beach product described in our equipment review uses manual milk steaming and touchscreen presets including an Americano and rapid cold-coffee programme.

Compare current prices and specifications rather than assuming they provide identical assistance because both use portafilters.

Who is it best for?

Consider the Bambino Plus if you want to learn espresso, value quick startup, have limited space and regularly make milk drinks. It is also useful if you want to select and upgrade a grinder separately.

Look elsewhere if you need a built-in grinder, specialist pressure or temperature profiling, or whole beans turned into a finished drink with very little preparation. If automatic milk is unimportant, compare the standard Bambino.

Cleaning and maintenance

Empty and rinse the basket and portafilter, keep the group area clean and wipe the steam wand immediately after use. Automatic purging does not replace external cleaning.

Clean the tray, replace the filter when required and follow Sage's cleaning-cycle and descaling instructions. Convenience features do not remove routine ownership tasks.

Our take

The useful middle ground is manual coffee preparation with optional automatic milk texturing. You retain a genuine espresso-learning workflow while receiving help with milk.

Include the grinder in your budget and recognise that advanced brewing controls are limited. If compactness, fast startup and milk assistance match your priorities, the combination makes sense.
