Nespresso Vertuo Next Review: Capsule Convenience for Larger Coffees

Silver and black Nespresso Vertuo Next by Krups with a mug of coffee and three Vertuo capsules

The Nespresso Vertuo Next by Krups is designed for people who want capsule convenience with more serving-size flexibility than a traditional Espresso-and-Lungo pod machine.

It uses the Vertuo capsule system, reading information from each compatible capsule to select brewing parameters. That is its central appeal: choose a capsule for the drink you want, insert it and press the button.

This overview is adapted from our existing equipment review, rather than a hands-on testing report. The Vertuo Next is a different model from the VertuoPlus reviewed elsewhere on this blog.

Why consider the Vertuo Next?

The strongest reason is the combination of simple preparation and different sizes of black coffee. You do not need to dial in a grinder, weigh a dose, tamp coffee or choose extraction settings each time you change drinks.

The trade-off is commitment to a capsule system. You are not buying the flexibility of a whole-bean machine or the direct control of a portafilter setup.

How Vertuo brewing works

A barcode around the capsule edge tells the machine which brewing parameters to use. Nespresso calls the extraction system Centrifusion: the capsule rotates while water passes through the coffee.

The useful buying distinction is not a rotational-speed claim. It is that the capsule and machine work together to remove most brewing decisions from the user.

Drink sizes and capsule compatibility

The existing equipment information lists formats ranging from Ristretto and Espresso through Double Espresso, Gran Lungo and Mug, with larger Alto and carafe-style options depending on capsule and machine compatibility.

Check the current capsule listing and the exact machine's compatibility before buying, particularly for newer or larger formats. A capsule determines its intended serving; the system is not simply designed around adding progressively more water to the same capsule.

This is particularly relevant if you prefer a full mug of coffee rather than mostly short drinks.

Original capsules do not fit

Nespresso Original capsules are not compatible with the Vertuo Next. The systems use different capsule formats and brewing methods. An existing supply of Original-compatible capsules cannot be transferred to this machine.

Likewise, Vertuo capsules do not work in an Original-system Essenza Mini or CitiZ. Choose the capsule ecosystem as carefully as the machine.

Water tank, startup and everyday use

The existing product specification lists a 1.1-litre removable water tank and an approximate 30-second heat-up. Automatic capsule recognition keeps preparation straightforward.

Refill frequency depends on drink size and rinsing. A household making large mugs uses water differently from someone choosing small coffees, so tank capacity should not be translated into a fixed number of drinks.

The machine includes a used-capsule container and automatic power-off after inactivity. Follow the model's opening, ejection and cleaning instructions.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

The Vertuo Next includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for compatible software updates and communication with Nespresso's system. That should not be confused with a promise of remote drink preparation.

It is better viewed as part of the platform than the main reason to choose this coffee machine.

What about milk drinks?

The standard machine does not texture milk. You can combine suitable Vertuo coffees with separately frothed milk, but will need a standalone frother for that function.

Check exactly what is included in the listing. Some machine-and-frother bundles include an Aeroccino; the machine name alone does not establish that a frother is supplied.

Vertuo Next versus Essenza Mini

The Essenza Mini uses Original capsules and focuses on Espresso and Lungo. Its appeal is a compact, straightforward short-coffee setup and the Original-compatible capsule market.

The Vertuo Next instead prioritises a wider range of serving sizes within Vertuo. If you mainly drink short coffees, compare capsule choice and cost before assuming the larger-format system is an upgrade.

Vertuo Next versus CitiZ with Aeroccino

The CitiZ is another Original-system option. An Aeroccino bundle adds separate automatic milk frothing, which can be useful for Espresso, Lungo and milk-based drinks.

The Vertuo Next's distinction is serving-size variety rather than integrated milk preparation. Include the cost of any required frother when comparing complete setups.

Vertuo Next versus traditional espresso

A portafilter machine lets you choose beans and adjust grind, dose, yield and puck preparation. The Vertuo Next removes most of those variables.

That makes it easier to use but less suitable if coffee preparation itself is a hobby you want to explore. Neither workflow is inherently better; they suit different priorities.

Running costs

The purchase price is only part of capsule ownership. Every drink needs a compatible capsule, so ongoing cost depends on your chosen range and household consumption.

Compare current cost per serving with Original-compatible capsules and whole beans. A small difference becomes more important when several people use the machine daily. We have not fixed capsule prices in this review because they change.

Capsules and recycling

Nespresso offers UK recycling arrangements for used aluminium capsules. Check current options for your area and whether you will realistically use them.

A recycling programme alone does not establish that one brewing method is environmentally preferable. Packaging, consumption and the actual disposal route all matter.

Cleaning and maintenance

Capsule convenience does not remove routine care. Clean the tank, empty the capsule container and maintain the cup support and accessible brewing areas according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Follow the cleaning and descaling procedures when required. Water hardness and frequency of use affect upkeep.

Who is it best for?

Consider the Vertuo Next if you want repeatable, one-button capsule coffee, regularly choose larger servings and are happy to commit to Vertuo capsules.

Look elsewhere if you want to use your existing Original capsules, prioritise a wide selection of third-party compatible pods, want detailed espresso control or mainly need a very compact short-coffee machine.

If milk drinks dominate your routine, assess the complete machine-and-frother setup rather than the coffee machine alone.

Our take

The strongest case is capsule convenience with a broad range of serving sizes. The main compromise is the Vertuo ecosystem and limited control of brewing.

Choose according to the drinks you make, the capsules you want to buy and the ongoing costs you are comfortable with. Check current machine specifications and capsule compatibility before purchase.
